What the heck is a GeoDuck Clam; pronounced GooEy Duck?
We were watching Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe awhlie back and one of the jobs he worked on was at a GeoDuck hatchery. These clams freaked me out! I’m a Jersey girl so I’m used to clams being the big ole ones you see on the beach, or little neck and cherrystones…what the heck is a Gooey Duck/GeoDuck?
This particular company was up in the Pacific, I think around Washington. They suck down into the sand, and the arm can grow up to 4-5 feet long and grow straight up, that’s where they release excess fluid, I guess breath and such. All I know is these things were freaky!
You boil them for 6 seconds, shuck the shell part in the bottom, which releases the skin type thing over the arm, and then they slice up the arm in thin pieces which is served sushi style…
These things were so wild! Now you know what a Geo Duck Clam is. (Gooey Duck)

I’m watching the EXACT same show that you’ve mentioned, and you’re entirely correct- it IS disgusting:P

I’m currently watching the same show and I’m shocked, how awful things people can do for money and how disgusting things people can put in their mouths…eeeek!
I love animals, so I thought I google what a Geoduck can be, coz Mike didn’t tell too much about the animal, and the first hit was U here! Hehe!
I’ve found this:
“How did the Goeduck get its name? According to David George Gordon’s book, “Field Guide to the Goeduck,” there are two explanations. The likely explanation is that the name is a European corruption of the Nisqually Indian word, “gweduc,” meaning dig deep. Another story says the the first white man to recognize the clam was John F. Gowey. Well known for his penchant for duck hunting Gowey would sometimes return from hinting forays with the big clams in his pouch. This led to the appellation “Gowey Ducks.” The Goeduck, Panopea generosa, is just one of several very large Pacific Coast bivalves. I’ve heard wild claims about Goeducks of three feet in length, but the largest I can verify was slightly less than a foot long.”

This is so funny because my husband and I watch dirty jobs all the time and saw the same one. Last night he was teasing me and called me a “gooey duck” and it made me think of dirty jobs and how I had no idea what they were so I googled it and here I am…They are indeed gross and I can’t imagine why anyone would want to eat them..YUCK!
