NJ Sex Offenders May be Barred from Internet

Under the plan, released sex offenders caught using the Internet would face up to 18 months in jail and fines of up to $10,000.
Sex offenders caught using the Internet to solicit a child would face a mandatory five years in jail, rather than the three years they face under current law.

Previously Governor Codey, now Senate President Richard Codey is looking to make a difference when it comes to sex offenders. Increasing the madatory time a sex offender faces when trying to get a child’s attention is a good step in the right direction. Limiting internet use is another, though I’m wondering how one would be monitored. People can access internet via their phones, libraries, internet cafes as well as from their home. I’m not sure how tightly something like this could be policed.
They article, which is quoted above from NJ.com speaks about dating sites being required to tell people if background checks were done on the people on their site. I think this alone would end up being a problem. Many people aren’t going to want a background check done, just to meet someone. There is not a federal law at this time, but a few states have all ready started this type of thing, such as Nevada and Florida. New Jersey may be the next in line.
